The Department of Computer Science was established in 1985 via amendment number 55 in the statutes of the University of Kerala. The Department was initially housed in the Senate hall campus at Palayam, Trivandrum, but in 1993 moved to the present more spacious building in the Karyavattom campus. It now enjoys a unique position among the University Departments and other advanced Institutions offering Computer Science and Information Technology programmes in the State.
Department of Computer Science, University of Kerala has generated a strong post graduate culture in computer studies .In the beginning, the Department had been running two taught courses viz, M.Sc. Computer Science (1989) with 30 students per batch and a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science in addition in providing facilities for Doctoral Research. Towards the end of the first decade of its existence, the Department discontinued the Postgraduate Diploma Programme and designed a new M.Tech (1998) programme in Computer Science, approved by AICTE. The M.Tech programme give specialization in Digital Image Computing and intake strength is 18.It receives good professional support from National R&D Institutions and Industry in the region. The Department offers a conducive environment for learning, thinking and achieving.
The student community is drawn from the entire state of Kerala and the southern districts of Tamil Nadu and most of them (70-80%) are getting placements in reputed firms / R&D organizations / academic institutions. It is a strong research centre in Computer Science and has published a good number of technical articles in International Journals / Conference Proceedings/Publications. In recognition of its efforts in research activities, the Dept. of Science & Technology, Govt. of India is supporting it through the FIST programme with a grant of Rs. 50lakhs. The AICTE gives grants around Rs. 10lakhs p.a. as scholarships to students undergoing M.Tech programme. UGC, KSCST and other agencies also support this Department through funding.
The Department, under the Credit and Semester Scheme, updates its syllabi every year and hence is able to attract young talents from all over the country. The newly started M.Tech programme is designed to meet the growing demand in highly specialized areas like intelligent systems, image processing and advanced software design.
The Department has established four very good Computing Laboratories: one for the M.Sc programme, two Labs for Digital Image Processing group and another for Embedded Systems to support its academic programmes, in addition, it maintains a fully automated good library. The Department is net connected and Faculties and students have access to a large number of on line publications including IEEE, ACM, UGC Infonet Consortium.
The Research programmes of the Department have borne fruit through 13 PhDs being produced from the Department during the last 7-8 years, which in Computer Science is a rare achievement. More than 150 students did their Master's Dissertation work on image processing and completed their M.Tech programme in the Department since 2000. The major areas of research are: Digital Image Processing, Artificial Neural Networks, Fuzzy Systems, Algorithms, Pattern Recognition and Data Mining etc. Publications by faculty members of the Department have appeared in reputed journals such as the Computer Journal (UK), IEEE Transactions, International journal of Foundation in Computer Science (USA), Informatica, Journal of Mat. Imaging, Computer Science and Informatics (INDIA) , Springer publications etc.

A very strong relationship is maintained with sister Departments, and Government, research, private organizations.
The Department of Computer Science has formed an alumni association, The Computer Science Department Alumni Association, University of Kerala Kariavattom,(COMSAAK), in the year 2003.
Its objective is to find people that could help each other in career, college application, funds, etc.
The Inaugural function and general body meeting was conducted on 14th February 2004, at the Conference Hall, Al-Saj Drive-in-Restaurant, Kazhakuttom. Inauguration was conducted by Dr. S Kevin, Pro-Vice Chancellor, and University of Kerala. Chief Guest, Dr.K R Sreevathsan, Director, IIIT-MK, Technopark, addressed the gathering.
The major activities to be conducted in future by the association:
1) To Complete the website for COMSAAK
2) Momento for the best outgoing and first year students of Msc and M.Tech .
3) To create a yearly newsletter regarding the alumni activities, like seminars, project exhibitions, workshop etc.
4) To strengthen the activities for enrolling the old students as life members.
