National Workshop on Technologies and Tools for Scientific Research

September 25-27, 2017
Organized by Department of Computer Science, University of Kerala


The workshop aims at providing an exposure to the theoretical and practical aspects in research activities and publications. The workshop will be ideal for research scholars and faculty members to gain awareness about the various scientometrics and typesetting tools in research. The workshop will run in tutorial mode and will aim to have interactive and hands-on sessions.

The course shall provide the participants with insights and knowledge on the following topics:

  • Ethics in research - How to write a good research article/project proposals, introduction to web resources and tools for literature review.
  • Scientometrics - concerned with analysing and measuring qualitative features and characteristics of science research, technology and innovations.
  • Latex - a typesetting program which is widely used to prepare thesis, dissertations and journal articles.
  • Zotero - a free, easy-to-use bibliographic manager that helps to gather, organize, cite and share research sources.

Dr. Gopakumar V.

University Librarian, Goa University
Dr. Gopakumar V. is presently working as University Librarian Goa University. He received his B.Sc. (Botany) and BLISc from University of Kerala in 1981 and 1983 respectively. He got his MLISc from Annamalai University in the year 2004. He has been awarded Ph.D. by Mangalore University in the year 2008. His area of interest is Library automation, Information literacy and Digital Content Development. He is a research guide in Library and Information Science at MS University, Trichyand Bharathidasan University. He has many research articles to his credit. He has published 24 research papers so far. He has attended many regional, national, international conferences, seminars, symposia and workshops and presented papers in various international and national conference. Mr. Mahesh C.

Asst. Professor, Federal Institute of Science And Technology
Mr. Mahesh C. is an Assistant Professor at Federal Institute of Science And Technology (FISAT), a private self-financing college located in Ernakulam. He is a postgraduate of the Dept. of Computer Science, University of Kerala, where he received an M.Tech. He has a long record of successfully guiding multinational companies with their projects and execution. His areas of expertise include machine learning research, system standardization and teaching. Mr. Sriram V.

Chief Librarian, Centre for Development Studies
Mr. Sriram V. has obtained BA in English Language and Literature, Master of Library and Information Science and qualified UGC-NET in Library and Information Science. Presently, he is working as Chief Librarian of KN Raj Library, Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Between 1997 and 2004 he has worked in several schools and engineering college libraries. During 2004-2008, he has worked in British Library, Thiruvananthapuram as Assistant Librarian. He was Library Consultant for FISAT, Angamaly (2002) and Trinity College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram (2010) and established their libraries. He is a member of Board of Studies of Rajagiri College of Social Science Kochi. He teaches about social science information sources, open access, social media, and reference management software. Dr. Nithin Nagaraj

Asst. Professor, National Institute of Advanced Studies
Dr. Nithin Nagaraj has Bachelors in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from National Institute of Technology Karnataka, INDIA (1999), Masters in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, USA (2001) and Ph.D. from National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru, INDIA (NIAS, 2010). He was a visiting faculty in Mathematics at IISER Pune for a brief while before joining as Assistant Professor at the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Amrita University for the period 2009-2013. He has worked as Research Scientist (2001-2004) and Lead Scientist at GE Global Research, Bengaluru, in the area of biomedical signal and image analysis (2013-2015). He is currently a faculty at the Consciousness Studies Programme, NIAS (since October 2015). His research interests include Information & Coding theory, Cryptography, Complexity theories of Consciousness, and Chaos Theory. Dr. Madhu S. Nair

Dr. Madhu S. Nair received his B.C.A. and M.C.A. from Mahatma Gandhi University with First Rank and M.Tech. in Computer Science from University of Kerala with First Rank. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science (Image Processing) from Mahatma Gandhi University. He has published 76 research papers in reputed International Journals and Conference Proceedings published by IEEE, Springer, Elsevier, Wiley, IOS Press etc. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, Member of ACM, Associate Life Member of CSI and Member of IAENG. He is a recipient of prestigious awards such as CSI Distinguished Assistant Professor Award 2017, SSI Young Systems Scientist Award 2015, IEI Young Engineers Award 2013-14, AICTE Career Award for Young Teachers (CAYT) 2013, CSI Paper Presenter Award at International Conference 2013, INAE Innovative Student Projects Award 2009 for Best M.Tech Thesis, AICTE Travel Grant Award 2008 etc. He is serving as reviewer for around 42 International Journals published by IEEE, Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, World-Scientific, Hindawi, etc., and also served as Technical Programme Committee Member/Reviewer for several reputed International Conferences. About the Department

The Department of Computer Science, University of Kerala, was established in 1985. It offers M.Sc. in Computer Science, M.Tech. in Computer Science (with specialization in Digital Image Computing), M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Computer Science. The Department gives at most importance on Research and Development besides regular teaching. Over the past few years the department has acquired national and international importance. The department has a track record of producing highly skilled professionals in the field of Computer Science. Many of the alumni are well placed in Institutes of National Importance, Central/State universities, R&D organisations like ISRO, CDAC, Educational Institutions and different MNCs. The department has produced more than 30 Ph.D.s so far. The students and faculty members have published a good number of research papers in reputed International Journals/Conference Proceedings published by IEEE, Springer, Elsevier, Wiley etc. Many of our students and faculty members have received national and international recognitions. Department of Computer Science is the only department in Kerala to bag the National Award for Best M.Tech. Thesis three times from Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), New Delhi. About the University

One of the first 16 Universities in India, the University of Kerala (Re-accredited by NAAC with A-grade) was founded as the University of Travancore in the erstwhile princely state of Travancore in 1937. At present, the University has sixteen faculties and forty one departments of teaching and research in addition to study centres and other departments. Teaching, Research and Knowledge extension are the mandate of the Departments. They primarily focus on post-graduate (masters) programmes, MPhil programmes (1-year research degree) and doctoral research. The total number of full-time students in the University Departments is above 2000 including research students and a modest number of foreign students. The Institute of Distance Education offers a number of under-graduate and post graduate programmes which cater to more than 7000 students, all over the country and abroad.

The University has also a number of study centres in specialised areas such as Nano-technology, Kerala Studies, Bioinformatics, Womens Studies, Learning Difficulties, Sree Narayana Studies, Gandhian Studies etc. The University has also established 10 University College of Teacher Education (UTEC) and 8 University Institute of Technologies (UIT) both of which offer under-graduate programmes (BEd in UTECs and BSc Computer Science/IT, Electronics/BBA in UITs). The University College of Engineering at Karyavattom offers Engineering Education at Undergraduate level. These institutions together have student strength of more than 5000.

The University has over 150 affiliated colleges. The role of the University is in prescribing courses of study and conducting examinations and issuing certificates. The day-to-day administration of these institutions is not under the purview of the University. However, these institutions form a major part of the University. Of these 60 are Arts and Science colleges. There are 2 Law colleges, 17 Engineering Colleges, 9 MBA/MCA Colleges, 37 Teacher Training Colleges, 4 Medical Colleges, 4 Ayurveda colleges, 2 Homeopathy Colleges, one Siddha Medical College, 3 Dental colleges, 10 Nursing Colleges, 4 Pharmacy Colleges, 2 Fine Arts Colleges, and a Music College.
